Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California Chapter

39th Annual Meeting

Held Jointly with the American Musicological Society,

Pacific-Southwest Chapter

February 26-27, 2005

Azusa Pacific University, Azusa CA

CALL FOR PROPOSALS (Please disseminate widely; this information will also be available on the SEMSCC website: http://ethnomus.ucr.edu/semscc1.html.)

Azusa Pacific University will host a joint conference of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California Chapter (SEMSCC) and the American Musicological Society, Pacific-Southwest Chapter (PSC-AMS) on February 26-27, 2005. Local SEM and AMS members, students, faculty, and all others interested in the fields of ethnomusicology and musicology are invited to submit proposals for papers, panels, roundtable discussions, workshops, film/video screenings, performances, or collective events for the 2005 conference.

As in the past, we prefer not to stipulate any conference themes in advance, instead allowing themes to emerge from the abstracts that are submitted. Both individual paper proposals and panel submissions are welcome. However, we encourage panel submissions in which three or four papers explore different aspects of a common theme. The Program Committee also extends a special invitation to local members of the Society for American Music to submit proposals that might be of mutual interest.

Proposals from graduate students in ethnomusicology and closely related fields are especially welcome. Graduate student papers are eligible for the Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize (see the guidelines posted on the SEMSCC website at http://ethnomus.ucr.edu/semscc1.html). We also strongly encourage local faculty and new or visiting scholars to contribute to the program.

The format is 20-minute papers followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

Paper and panel proposals and abstracts must be submitted via email: Send an email with the information requested on the Individual Abstract Information Form or Panel/Roundtable Abstract & Information Form (found below) in the body of the message to hoodkat@sbcglobal.net along with abstracts. (No attachments please.)

Individual paper proposals

Provide the requested information on the Individual Abstract Information Form, including an abstract of up to 250 words.

Panel proposals

Organized panels are encouraged. The panel chair/organizer must submit a Panel/Roundtable Abstract & Information Form along with individual paper abstracts from each member of the panel. The panel abstract should not exceed 150 words, while the individual abstracts may be up to 250 words. Panels may have 3 or 4 papers, or 3 papers and a discussant.

Roundtables and other formats

If you wish to organize a roundtable or other non-paper oriented session, use the Panel/Roundtable Abstract form below to describe the session. The chair/organizer should submit an abstract of up to 250 words. We recommend that you communicate with Kathleen Hood, the Program Committee Chair, before submitting such a proposal.

DEADLINE: Thursday, December 30, 2004.

Notifications will be made the week of January 24, 2005 through email.
