At our annual meeting on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 we approved our new name, the Society for Ethnomusicology Southern California & Hawai'i Chapter (SEMSCHC). To commemorate this occasion, Mariachi Uclatlán from UCLA and Keola Donaghy from Hawai'i offered songs and chant. The tradition we honored is a venerable one. Through exchanging greetings, members from Southern California and from Hawai'i acknowledged the inestimable value of the other. This symbolic exchange served as a pledge of commitment and trust. It was this, as much as the scholarly institution of which we are a part, that we celebrated.
As many of you know, Ric Trimillos was instrumental in initiating the venture on which we have embarked. We also owe Timothy Cooley a word of thanks. It was during Tim's tenure as president that we set out on this path. I had the great privilege and joy to formally welcome Hawai'i at this inaugural meeting. Welcome Hawai'i!! With you, I look forward to the new adventures and new horizons that await us as colleagues, partners and friends.
