Dean of College of Mass Communication

Middle Tennessee State University seeks a Dean for the College of Mass Communication. The College, one of the nation’s largest with sixty faculty serving more than 2,800 majors, consists of the School of Journalism, Department of Radio-Television/Photography, and the Department of Recording Industry. The $15.5 million John Bragg Mass Communication Building was completed in 1991. The College houses the Seigenthaler Chair of Excellence in First Amendment Studies and two licensed radio stations, and offers a master’s degree in Mass Communication. An MFA in Recording Arts and Technologies is planned.

The Dean is the chief academic officer for the College and reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The candidate will possess a terminal degree in a field related to one of the programs in the College and have the qualifications for the rank of full professor. Documented administrative competence and leadership required. A commitment to fundraising and the ability to develop relationships with industry and professional groups are important qualifications. The candidate will have a commitment to faculty governance; dedication to faculty and student concerns; the ability to communicate well with faculty, students, and administrators; sensitivity to the diversity of the College’s programs; and support for equal opportunity and affirmative action in employment and promotion.

Scholarship, research/creative activity, and professional involvement are required. The salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Appointment will be effective Fall, 2001.
