The Society for Ethnomusicology,
Southern California Chapter

Thirty-Fourth Annual Meeting
26 - 27 February 2000
University of San Diego

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANEL TOPICS

The history of a thousand years begins with a single meeting.

The Thirty-Fourth Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, Southern California Chapter shall convene 26 and 27 February 2000 at the University of San Diego, overlooking the city of San Diego. All local SEM members, students, faculty, and prospective members with an interest in learning more about the field of ethnomusicology are cordially invited to attend.

The program committee requests proposals for papers, panels, roundtable discussions, workshops, film-video screenings, performances, and collaborative events. Because the meeting will be held jointly with the American Musicological Society, Pacific Southwest Chapter, papers addressing such themes as "Ethnomusicological Approaches to the Study of Western Art Music," "Intersections of Musicological and Ethnomusicological Research," and "Ethnomusicology and the Music Department"--as well as other topics and issues--are welcome. As response may suggest, one or more panels including presenters from both societies shall be included within the program. Members of the local chapter of the Sonneck Society are also invited to submit proposals for consideration of the program committee.

Papers submitted by graduate students in ethnomusicology and closely related fields are eligible for the Ki Mantle Hood Prize (please see enclosed Guidelines). The committee further encourages submissions from local faculty and visiting scholars.

Please submit six (6) copies of an abstract of 300 words or less, one page maximum. One copy should include the author's name, institutional affiliation and address (or home address) in the lower left-hand corner. Please include text only (without name or address) for the remaining five copies.

Please send abstracts and a stamped, self addressed envelope to the following address:
