1997 Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize

The Ki Mantle Hood Student Prize Committee consisted of Nancy Van Deusen (Claremont Graduate School), Paul Humphreys (CSUN), and Amy Stillman (UCSB), chair. The guidelines call for the committee to be chaired by the chapter vice-president, and to include program chairs for the immediate and past meetings. Because the 1996 Program Chair, Michelle Kisliuk, no longer resides in the region, the Paul Humphreys as chapter president served on the prize committee.

The committee wishes to announce the following awards.

The 1997 Ki Mantle Hood Prize for best paper presented by a graduate student at the annual chapter meeting is awarded to David Ake of UCLA, for his paper, "An Experience Beyond Sound: Keith Jarrett and the Sensual-Sacred in Contemporary Instrumental Music."

The committee also awards honorable mention to the following students:

David Borgo (UCLA), "Music, Metaphor, and Mysticism: Avant-garde Jazz Saxophone and the Ecstatic State"

Minako Waseda (UCSB), "Music and Language in Traditional Japanese Music in California"
